QUESTION: My father had a brain hemorrhage, he started to give response gradually. What happens after this reaction? How does the recovery from a brain hemorrhage progress?

To answer how recovery after a brain hemorrhage will happen, it is important to know these in the first place:

  • How was the brain hemorrhage treated in the early period?
  • Was the medication sufficient?
  • Did an intervention happen with interventional radiologic procedure?
  • Did the patient need brain surgery?

After that, it is important to know which blood vessel in the brain bled, how much tissue got damaged, and whether it caused a situation of edema which happened in the brain and which will harm the other tissues.

Therefore, the situation which can be seen in the patient after a brain hemorrhage completely depends to the person. In addition to how the brain was affected and how much it was affected, the patient’s age, whether they have a heart disease, diabetes, arrhythmia, cancer or any other diseases also affect the situation and the recovery process after brain hemorrhage.

What Do We Do During the Recovery Process?

When the patient has a stroke caused by brain hemorrhage or brain embolism and is taken to the intensive care, we evaluate the patient and start to give physical therapy service as soon as the patient’s situation is stabilized. We start to the preventive treatments against joint stiffness, clotting disorder in veins, opening of a wound on the back or hips and the passive physical therapy applications. In this way, joints of the patient are protected and no other losses ensue until a more intensive treatment starts.

When the patient survived the intensive care phase and proceeds to the inpatient service, we send them to the physical therapy and rehabilitation clinic if the medical findings are stable. We perform the specialized therapies in stroke and paralysis treatment and neuro-rehabilitation applications an our clinic. Meanwhile, we wait for the recovery of the patient day by day.

  • We stimulate the patient’s brain for healing with a comprehensive and intensive rehabilitation program which contains physiotherapy applications,
  • Treatment with electric currents,
  • Ergotherapy,
  • Robotic physical therapy applications
  • Speech and swallowing therapy.

However, it is not possible to give an exact duration in this point because the injury in the brain and recovery process is special in every patient. Patients and their relatives should focus on striving for recovery by holding fast onto the treatment program as much as possible. The patients whom we returned to daily life and work after intensive physical therapy and rehabilitation applications were the ones who did not give up and strove until the end.
